Boxicated is a very small minecraft survival map that will please a bunch of old school minecraft survival map players. When I say ‘old school’ I mean people who consider Sky Block and Survival Island to be quintessential survival map types. You spawn inside a very small bedrock box. You’re allowed to mine outside the box, but you’re not allowed to mine to the surface outside the box. That’s a rule to remember because it will only take a wooden spade to escape the box if you really want to.

Fortunately the interior of the earth is more interesting than what lies above it. I won’t spoil it too much, but you should watch out for arrows coming out of nowhere, appearing from the void to spear your frail blocky frame. Though this is a small and simple map, it works. I thought it was perhaps too facile to be entertaining, but before I knew what was happening I was hoarding iron and wondering how tto best make use of my tall bedrock box.

Are there challenges? Of course, all the usual challenges, create houses, farms, design farms, generate cobblestone. (You always have to generate cobblestone, even when there’s really no need to on this map because you can mine right into the very depths of the minecraft earth if you want.) There are also other, more interesting challenges, like lake building and secret chest finding.

A volcanic island full of surprises, Monte Major is a minecraft survival island map with style. The volcano that dominates the center of the island is an impressive sight, especially when you step up to the crater and see the red hot lava bubbling far below. At that point you might very well feel the call of the void, but do stash your valuables before you respond as the outcome is unlikely to be positive. (And when I say unlikely, I mean I tested it twice for science, and it didn’t turn out well at all.)

This isn’t what I’d call a challenging survival map because there aren’t any restrictions (space restrictions, item restrictions, or other factors specifically included in the map to make your life more difficult) it’s more of a a survival challenge taking place on terrain you just won’t find in a generic minecraft spawn. Much of the island is covered in thick jungle, though there are parts of it where sparse pine trees tower skywards and where streams flow and apple trees blossom. Sometimes you’ll find a pig stuck in a tree, like a fly in a venus fly trap.

In addition to the wonderful terrain, there are two custom dungeons you can pit your skills against. Players who play this map on anything other than peaceful are going to find the battle to subdue the hostile monsters of the island a hard fought one.

Those daring to explore the deep reaches of the volcano will be handsomely rewarded, as with those who simply wander about the place poking their noses where they may or may not belong. For a beautiful survival experience, you really should:

A minecraft survival map with amazing scope, Eldaria Island is a very large survival map encompassing unique biomes, a custom nether and a true survival experience that is not limited to a box or an island in the sky but which extends for thousands of blocks in every direction.

This is the sort of survival map that will require multiple bases, a great deal of travel by boat and foot and the spark of adventure that lives inside those who are true explorers. This is one map that must be played to be understood. Whether you make your home in a lofty treetop or at the top of a massive desert mountain, it will be many hours before you tire of the spectacular terrain.

There is also the option to download the map in creative and hard mode versions, so players who want to either explore at speed or grind their way through the terrain at a more dangerous pace can do that if they want to.

Underground minecraft survival underground is a less frequently use device than you might think, which makes this Cavern Survival map quite an original piece of work.

Instead of laboring beneath the big square sun in the sky, you must eek your existence out like a Morlock. (That’s a human that has evolved underground for many generations, not to be confused with a Murloc, which is an aquatic lizard creature that hunts in tribes and says ALLLALALAURABLGR a lot.

Right, now we have that out of the way, back to the map itself. I enjoyed Cavern Survival because it forced a different strategy than light walking maps do. You have to know a little bit about how to make things grow underground in order to survive. (The wiki is always a good place to go if you don’t know why none of your trees are growing.)

One might be forgiven for thinking than an underground minecraft survival map would be an ugly, or at the very least, boring place. But these caverns are actually quite visually appealing places with high ceilings and just enough touches of green to make a day dweller feel somewhat at home. This place could be a paradise you know. Why not make it one?

We’ve seen blocks of dirt in the sky, we’ve seen islands amidst vast oceans and now we’re looking at a few square meters of smoothstone in a lava sea and we’re thinking that we’ve played it all before. But we’re wrong. Very wrong.

Lava block is a unique and challenging minecraft survival map, guaranteed to make even the most experienced survival map players scratch their heads. Minecraft survival purists might not like the fact that there is a starting chest, but this starting chest is unique. Most starting chests come with a few seeds, maybe some armor, and some wood and torches and whatnot. This one starts you off with 128 water blocks. Nothing more and nothing less. That’s water blocks, not water buckets, so be careful about where you put them because you’re not going to be able to pick them up, at least not at first.

There are other chests atop interesting structures in the middle distance, but you’re going to have to find a way across lava to get to them, and once you get there, opening them may not be easy because you have no tools and well, they’re pretty high up. There’s obvious means of turning smoothstone into cobble and though you’ve got plenty of lava and water, you’ve got no way to harvest it.

In addition to mechanical challenges, the map holds some surprises. Though it looks incredibly simple, it’s deceptively complex. Your first tumble into the lava might surprise you. That’s all I’m saying.

Like some of the better minecraft survival maps, it’s very possible to lose this map. A few careless slips and you’re going to be left with no choice but to delete the world and start again. This sort of high stakes survival will probably appeal to a survival community growing dull on cutesy maps.
