The Sunken Island is a minecraft adventure map that begins with a fairly sunken boat and a trail of debris heading off into the horizon. When one follows the debris, one finds a huge hole in the ocean. Yes you read that correctly, a hole in the ocean. Sort of like what might happen if Moses opened an island time share. At the bottom of this hole in the ocean is the Sunken Island. A title which will now be abundantly clear and reasonable to even the sternest skeptics who did not understand how an island could ever be sunk.
After riding the ocean waterfall down to the island, one is free to begin one’s adventure with leather armor and a bucket of water to spare. From the outset the Sunken Island is full of surprises, like this random mooshroom cow with its large black void like eyes that have seen the coming of the days of the infection.
The Sunken Island is full of nature’s bounty, and tribal dispenser outposts, which makes stocking up on supplies a not too arduous task. Pro tip: a dispenser entirely covered in vines will not work. You must clear at least one side of vines before you can extract the supplies within. It’s not always plainly apparent what you’re actually supposed to be doing on the Sunken Island, but then how many land masses come with pre-placed signs anyway? This is an adventure map based largely on the idea that exploration is fun and activating old monuments is an amusing past time.

CobblStep City is a very ambitious minecraft adventure map, comprising several locations spread out over a large area, dubbed ‘Cobbl County’. This is a very in-depth, well developed map with its own (completely imaginary) currency, job tree and multiple cities and locations for the exploration minded adventurer. This adventure map is designed to be non-linear, which means there’s not a whole lot of hand-holding and direction given. You determine your own adventure by where you choose to go and what you choose to do when you get there.
As a newcomer to CobbleStep city, you begin life as a refugee with no home and no education. As you play your way through the map (if you play your cards right,) you will become a college educated home owner. If you prefer, you could also be a homeless fellow or felless living in a hole in the ground, as is your right. Mansions, riches and fifty pieces of chain mail armor await you if you choose to climb the social ladder.
If you like fully fleshed out minecraft adventure maps with lots of large builds and plenty of different cities and locations to explore, Cobblstep City is going to be a ‘must download’ for you. The scope of the thing is very impressive, spanning several ‘continents’. What I also really admire about this map is the way a ‘creative’ switch has been enabled within the map itself, so if you simply want to look at a whole lot of pretty buildings, you simply flip a switch in the refugee center and fly off like Superman, or Neo at the end of the first Matrix movie, albeit with less vortex cloud effects.

Top Ramen took several minutes to download. That should be an indication of its size, which is large. Though it is compatible with the latest minecraft release, the format is pre-anvil, so it needs some converting time. Factor that in if you’re experiencing insatiable minecraft adventure cravings.

Woah. From the very first inkling of the very first screenshot of the Inkstar minecraft adventure map one can’t help but be blown away by the scale, intricacy and sheer design chops displayed in this map’s builds. It puts most other minecraft maps to shame, it puts most real world buildings to shame. It puts shame to shame, that’s how incredibly impressive this adventure download is.
This map is so large, so incredibly complex that the creator recommends Optifine be used to run it. It also comes with a custom texture pack to show the builds in their best light. (Optifine will also assist in running the 32x textures that are bundled with the map download.)
How did such a fantastic minecraft world come into existence? Why, dragons made it of course. That explains the scale of things, although I’m not entirely convinced that dragons have the opposable claws necessary to realistically build these monuments to dragon architecture.
This map is so large that it comes with not one, but two downloadable maps to help you navigate around the place (one of which is over 5000 px wide, over twice the size of your average monitor) as you take a tour of a minecraft world that will make all your builds seem like dirt shacks in comparison. That’s what I look for in a minecraft world download, something that makes me feel about as creative as some mud on a stick. Some of the cities in this map are so large it is actually impossible to render them all at once, even from the giddy heights of the sky.
But it’s not just epic builds that make this map fun, it’s also the technical aspects that are impressive. As in Bethesda RPGs, fast travel has been added to the game, simply reach a fast travel pillar and right click it in order to activate a fast travel point. This saves days of traipsing back and forth between points because you forgot your enchanted sword in another castle.
This is definitely a must play, and it is almost certainly one of the best minecraft 1.4 adventure maps out to date.

You begin this CTM survival map holding a cookie, which pretty much sold me on the whole map immediately. Give me a cookie and I will happily minecraft all day long. Heck, the cookie even distracted me from the fact that my little room was lit by pouring lava. The second thing that sold me on this CTM map is that survival tactics are allowed. Want to make a little house with a wheat farm beside it? Go ahead. Block breaking isn’t just allowed, it’s encouraged.
The adventure part of the map comes in the form of passages, dungeons and trials each more dangerous than the one before. Because you are allowed to break and place blocks as you like, overcoming these challenges is a matter of motivation and crafting techniques, not mad leaping from ladder to ladder. I felt a lot more engaged with this map than with other CTM maps that simply made you leap into lava for their own amusement.
Good use of Ender Chests means that you can store the precious wool you need to complete the monument, so should you fall prey to one of the tricksy traps set for you, the game is not necessarily over then and there.
Caves of Darkoth makes the player engage in genuine minecraft activities, mining, smelting, sailing, fishing, you know, real survival stuff. You can’t always see where you’re going and you’re never sure where the next monster will rear its head, but you’re never bored either.
