Do I actually play all these survival maps I review? You bet your little organic cotton fiber booties I do! Here’s a progress shot from the Death Island Minecraft Survival map, which truly is one of the best survival maps I’ve played in a long time. Note the way the greenery is starting to return to the land under the benevolent view of my squat bungalow.

We’ve seen blocks of dirt in the sky, we’ve seen islands amidst vast oceans and now we’re looking at a few square meters of smoothstone in a lava sea and we’re thinking that we’ve played it all before. But we’re wrong. Very wrong.

Lava block is a unique and challenging minecraft survival map, guaranteed to make even the most experienced survival map players scratch their heads. Minecraft survival purists might not like the fact that there is a starting chest, but this starting chest is unique. Most starting chests come with a few seeds, maybe some armor, and some wood and torches and whatnot. This one starts you off with 128 water blocks. Nothing more and nothing less. That’s water blocks, not water buckets, so be careful about where you put them because you’re not going to be able to pick them up, at least not at first.

There are other chests atop interesting structures in the middle distance, but you’re going to have to find a way across lava to get to them, and once you get there, opening them may not be easy because you have no tools and well, they’re pretty high up. There’s obvious means of turning smoothstone into cobble and though you’ve got plenty of lava and water, you’ve got no way to harvest it.

In addition to mechanical challenges, the map holds some surprises. Though it looks incredibly simple, it’s deceptively complex. Your first tumble into the lava might surprise you. That’s all I’m saying.

Like some of the better minecraft survival maps, it’s very possible to lose this map. A few careless slips and you’re going to be left with no choice but to delete the world and start again. This sort of high stakes survival will probably appeal to a survival community growing dull on cutesy maps.

These fine fellows cheated rampantly, but I’ll forgive them for it because their antics were hilarious and a great time appeared to have been had by all. There’s a saying that too many cooks spoil the broth, but too many players crammed into one little asteroid makes it awesome.

You’ve been bad. Very bad. What your crime was is irrelevant. All you need to know is that you’ve been sent off planet to a prison asteroid, Prison Sphere #6689, where you’ll eek out your remaining days doing your best to survive against the elements and the monsters and the overwhelming solitude that threatens to choke the last breath from your body. Escape is impossible, survival is extremely unlikely.

Unlike other survival maps that hand you a relatively blank slate to wreak your evils upon, Prison Sphere #6689 has been tailored for your long term stay at the outset. The powers that be don’t want you to die too soon after all. What would be the point of that?

You’re certainly not the first prisoner to be sentenced to life on the prison asteroid. There are signs of previous occupation everywhere you look. The broken bars that once rimmed the outer perimeter of the asteroid are testament to the terrible madness that gripped some prisoners who preferred to dive into the lava rather than face the endless tedium of the small prison.

In accordance with new prisoner regulations, you have not been left entirely unequipped. A small ration of food and a pair of pants have been allotted to you. Of course, survival isn’t exactly being handed to you on a platter either. You’re going to have to seek out the materials you need to sustain life. Those willing to brave dangers may find themselves richer than they ever imagined.

Find hidden chests to obtain useful items to aid you in your quest for survival. Look for subtle clues to discover where previous inhabitants have hidden the few precious materials smuggled onto the prison sphere.
